If I remember correctly there used to be something called QNX, that would fit in one floppy disk (1.44MB) and had internet access. But don't hold me on that. :)

I have no idea about QNX since it's my first time to here about it. Don't know much about unix since i have only tried ubunto. But i read in some articles that google chrome OS will be a light one. I just read it and not sure about it.

Its UNIX-like operating system with proprieatary license.

@kaice, you can find more about QNX at wikipedia :

And you can also read something about preparation here :

If you are looking for the tiniest OS which would have to support Graphical User Interface, Internet access and lots of small applications including Games, file editors, etc, then you must try Puppy Linux. I was as small as 50 MB. But would expand to 120 MB in the RAM. The latest version has expanded to 100MB and 256 MB with Open Office and can be freely downloaded from the link quoted below!.

It can be burnt into a Boot-able CD-Rom, and also used when your HDD has failed or corrupted or has irrecoverable damage. I really liked it since it was very handy and would only take some 5 mins max to set up and can be running for a long time. Besides, if you have good amount of RAM, you can do a lot of stuff, creative and also processing tasks real quick!.

There is DSL - damn small linux.
If you're looking for a small and full featured OS that is practical in today's world with the need for internet access and installable applications like windows, it is Ubuntu, another linux varient.

if you want in CD, Damn Small Linux or Puppy Linux are the tinies one...
but if you want in Floppy, try the Xnuxer Linux (it was created by my friend)...

Damn Small Linux, might be the smalles yet functional linux. But it definitely out of date. You can't get newer program running on DSL.
