Online Security Software
This page is solely about and deals with the security of your PC!
Kaspersky Anti-Virus Personal

It checks local hard disks, floppy disks, and networks, as well as Internet downloads, e-mail attachments, and groupware. You can scan for malicious code in scheduled, on-access (whenever a file is opened), or on-demand modes. If you're still frazzled by the whole process, Sophos offers 24-hour technical support, seven days a week

Spyware Remover
Ad Muncher

d Muncher is a program for Windows systems which removes adverts, popups and other annoying things from all popular browsers, as well as most banner displaying and popup generating programs like ICQ, Morpheus, Kazaa, Grokster, Opera, PalTalk, iMesh, Bearshare, LimeWire, etc.

Bazooka Adware and Spyware Scanner detects a multitude of spyware, adware, Trojan horses, keyloggers, and trackware components, sources of irritation that many antivirus products do not deal with. The scanning process only takes a fraction of a second and tells you how to uninstall the invasive spyware or puts you in contact with the spyware developer for the most up-to-date and safe uninstall instructions. Spyware and adware often is bundled with software such as Kazaa, Morpheus, Grokster, iMesh, Xolox, and Gnutella, and in many cases it's installed without your knowledge. Some send information about your surfing habits to ad companies, which target you with pop-up ads that fit your preferences. Bazooka Adware and Spyware Scanner search for Gator, GAIN, Bargain Buddy, CommonName, FlashTrack, IPInsight, nCase, NetRatings, NewDotNet, SaveNow, and WurldMedia.

Spy Hunter

SpyHunter detects and removes spyware of different kinds from your computer. Spyware is a relatively new kind of threat that common anti-virus applications do not yet cover. If you are seeing things like excessive popups, new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you didn't intentionally install, if your browser crashes, or if you browser start page has changed without your knowing, you most probably have spyware

Ai Roboform

AI RoboForm is a push-button web form filler with some serious Artificial Intelligence (AI) inside. It allows you to define your personal profile or "usual" responses to a web form. Within is a very good password protection. This information is then saved, and when you need to fill a form, just click "Fill Forms" button, and form is filled out.

Interesting list, haven't heard a few of them.

My recommendations are different though, most of which have free versions:

Anti Virus:
Antivir ( a friend of mine who installed it just a couple days ago found many more virus than found by kaspersky )

Anti Intrusion:
MS Spyware Remover

Anti Spyware:
Spybot Search and Destroy

Spyware Blaster

and remember not to have too many of the same type running resident

Agnitum Outpost is a very good firewall, and it's free. I like Look n Stop a lot, too, though that's pay-for.

If you like rules-based stuff, then try Agnitum.

McAfee also puts out a nice free little anti-malware tool called Stinger. You don't even need to instal it, just download and run it. It can't be updated from your computer but it's a snap to check for new versions. It doesn't scan for everything, but it's up-to-date on the latest 20 or 30 most prevalent viruses/trojans around at any given time.

If you have to use windows:
Use FireFox web browser.
Use Anti-Spyware, a good one is ConterSpy. MS AntiSpyware is also good and is free for now.
Use good Anti-Virus software AVG is good and there is a free version, but there are many other good ones as well.
Use a firewall! Either a hardware firewall or software firewall or both! Personally I use a hardware firewall, as well as, a linux firewall to do high level filtering after the hardware firewall does the low level blocking and filtering before the data hits my network.

The best solution:
Go to DistroWatch and get Linux!
You can install it on an old pc and use it for surfing or like Trinary has said you can download a linux Live CD. You just download the iso image and use your favorite burning software to make the CD. Then when you want to surf, shutdown your pc, insert Live Linux and boot (make sure your bios is set to boot off cd before hard drive). You can use your live CD with any computer including and old one. And since you are running off of CD, any bad stuff will be gone the next time you use it!

For the technically savvy:
Use Trinary's elegant solution and get VMWARE or one of the other Virtual Machine programs which allow you to run Linux on your Windows pc. Or to run windows on your Linux pc!

Never use Auto Complete in any browser, especially not Internet Explorer. Hackers have been stealing data from the Auto Complete store from unsuspecting users.

Never AutoSurf or even normally surf questionable sites from your main computer and operating system if you have any important data whatsoever on it, which most of us do.

If you use XP, turn your built-in XP firewall on or use the one your AV software may have come with.

Use a different email address and password for e-gold than you use for your Auto Surf's or other sites. Of course, you should use a different password on every site. But also use different email addresses for any sites where you have large investments. This is because most sites use your email address as a login name and is easier for someone to guess if you use the same one everywhere.

using vmware is troublesome for me, i'd prefer getting a 2nd hand pc to install linux distro instead (slackware, redhat) and just simply run it for investment sake, for security purposes. it's cheap to get a p4 box these days and linux distribution os doesnt usually require much power.

i'd write up soon for tools we can use as well, though i think the forum has already introduced loads and loads of good software to use.

use password managers like roboform, it roxx anyone's ass off

Yah, I agree nobshyip. If people can acquire an extra computer that is ideal. Since I am a network engineer and work in the field daily, I have 8 computers on a network in my house! So that is exactly what I do. I have 1 computer running Linux and dedicated to all my auto surf programs. It is cut off from the rest of my network to prevent any kind of hanky panky. But, some may not be able to get an extra computer for that purpose. This is where a Linux Live CD is a great solution for them! The Virtual Machine solution I have used for other things, but not for auto surf. Trinary does use a VM solution though, and really likes it.

Posted in another thread, but also try http://lincd.com/ -- any number of distros of bootable Linux for $2 a pop (as well as loads of regular distros for the same price). For those who are ISO-burning challenged, have painfully slow Net connections and the six-hours download is just too much, and want to run 'Nix off their CD drive.
