As of noon today (my time BST) I checked for and downloaded every update for each security software that my computer has. After a full sweep with everything my computer was declared clean and green.
However when logging in to E-Gold with the correct URL I received the PIN email and after inputting it back came the message in bright red “Enter correct turing number!” Yes I know that turing should have been written Turing but it’s not my fault if the E-Gold admin are philistines. I KNOW that the Turing number that I inputted was correct but I inputted the required new one and I was logged in OK. But with one significant difference. Instead of being taken to the page that displays my Sentinel settings I was taken to the page that displays my balance. It is at this point I was beginning to get that de ja vous feeling. I selected Account Info and then the AccSent tab to check my Sentinel settings and discovered they had all been changed. Detect IP Address Change Sensitivity was now at Disabled Detect Browser Change was now at Disabled Automation Access was now at Allow from ANY IP Address. I also received an email from E-Gold informing me that my Sentinel settings had been changed. I re-set the settings to the maximum and got the email from E-Gold notifying me of the change. I went through this routine several times this morning, which prompted my check for updates and the scan. So what does it all mean? I haven’t a clue except that possibly my account was being set up for an unauthorised withdrawal once someone managed to get hold of my password. My current password obviously had not been compromised because my account showed the balance that it was supposed to so I found no reason to change it. I also reasoned that if I changed it now (as someone might be expected to do in such a situation) if I have something brand new and nasty on my computer I might be unwittingly giving them the password in changing it. The question is I am alone in this experience? The other point to consider is that if on logging in successfully you get taken to your balance page and not the page that displays your Sentinel settings then check out those settings right away.

thanks for the info, Jambutty. I just checked my E-gold account and everything looks ok. I've never had any problems with my E-gold account so far. but I'll be looking on with interest.

No you are not alone. The same thing happened to me yesterday. I got autobot message, and sure enough all of my security settings had been changed. I changed them back.
And then later in the day, I could no longer log into my account! Evidently a hacker at work. I did all of the scans, etc. but found nothing. I had a second e-gold account, and got a autobot message that someone trying to access it! I redid the passphrase with the virtual keyboard, and so far no attempt yet. But my old e-gold now totally screwed up, and not even able to change e-gold number for payout in some programs. So the hackers will be enjoying the fruits of my labor I guess. I am fairly experienced at this and do not fall for phishing schemes, etc. so not sure how they did it. Sent e-gold a message, but doubt that will help much. Gonna try and call them after weekend. Something is indeed going on here. Beware. |

Wow, I thought I had my new e-gold number set up, complete with new passphrase made with the virtual keyboard. No more manual logging in for me!
Well, I checked tonight and low and behold my security settings had again all been turned off! The Automation for any IP access cannot even be altered. And I again was carried to the "confirm turing number screen" My account had evidently been accessed perhaps without the passphrase, as I never typed it in! Used virtual. It seems to me that perhaps the e-gold site has been taken over and maybe they are accessing the passphrase database? Also, the bot never notified me of the changing of my security settings. So they got around that some way. So anyway, someone is able to get into account, evidently without passphrase, unless they can read a virtual keyboard some way. And without triggering the warning bot! Last edited by nightwind : 27-03-2006 at 04:46 AM. Reason: grammar |

jambutty ,if u check the email u got from egold about the change,i mean the one that disbled ur security settings to "allow from any ip" you will be able to see from which ip it was changed and run search on google for "ip locator" ,once u get such sites ,then enter the ip of the scammer that changed ur details and it will show u the locatiobn and the the internet provider of the person that did the unauthorize changes,
morever i suggest u change ur egold passphrase all teh same, though that should be afters canning and making sure ur pc is clean.its just impossible to imgaine how someone can change such sensitive detaisl without getting access to ur passphrase . |

In a way it is nice to know that I am not alone with this problem and it’s not me going senile or doolaly or something.
It would appear that what happens is that when you access E-Gold using a tampered with bookmark it disables the Sentinel settings. You know that something is wrong when you get told that you inputted the wrong Turing number when you KNOW that you have not. When putting in the new right one you get taken straight to your Balance page instead of the page that displays your Sentinel settings. Clever move that because I suspect that most people would not see this as a problem and carry on doing what they intended to do in E-Gold and log out. Thus they leave their E-Gold account with the Sentinel settings disabled and not know it. Now all the thief needs is a password. But the real problem is how to get rid of something that you don’t know what it is or where it is? I just know that there is something new on my computer and none of the various anti this that and the other software detects it. AdAware gets rid of the effects of this ‘extra’ by removing the E-Gold bookmark but no sooner that you access E-Gold by a ‘clean’ bookmark it all starts again. Actually there WAS something new on my computer. It’s not there now. As a quicker alternative to re-formatting the hard drive, re-installing everything and getting all the various updates, not least of which is the XP updates, which can take hours and hours even on broadband, I opted for a System Restore from two weeks ago. I have always been in the habit of setting a System Restore point BEFORE installing any new software and in any case XP sets its own restore points from time to time so I had a good selection to choose from. Once restored it took a couple of hours to get any updates and a full sweep of my computer to establish a clean machine. Then came the ultimate test. Could I log in to E-Gold without any problems? Yes! I could and I have done once every hour for the last 12 hours without any problems at all. Thus I am confident that my computer does not have what it had before. So I took the opportunity to change my password just in case the potential thief had managed to get hold of it somehow and didn’t clean out my account because there was less than $5 in it. S/he was waiting for a larger amount to appear. I have set another System Restore point so that should I get infected again, at the first signs all I need to do is a System Restore to that point and all will be well again. The chances of my computer getting infected again are quite high because I am sure that it came from a rotated page on an autosurfer. I have no idea which one but I think that I know what I am looking for. I came across that Explorer User Prompt with the words Javascript initialised in a text box again and it was since that time my problems started. The ROI surfers in question are, with the first three being the prime suspects: Black Gold Surf Surfers Garden WiredSurf ProSurfInvest MoneyUnit FairDinkumSurf KnightsGoldSurf SearchSence MillionetteS TotalRune MySurfPortal Instant Money Flow Knight Surfers MaximumSurf
