I think a lot depends on how much you want to spend. I used F-Secure Internet Security until recently (combined AV and Firewall) which was excellent but got to be very expensive.

I recently switched to "Outpost" firewall (6 months freebie on a magazine cover disk) and downloaded Avast (free AV) and so far it is proving to be effective.

If you don't want to pay for a firewall then I believe the one from Kerio is good - I didn't find it very easy to configure but it did the job well when I tried it.

I'm sure people here will let you know what works for them.

Do a Google search if you want the Kerio stuff, I believe it is still free and is good. Zone Alarm is also a popular choice, no doubt someone will let you know if it is effective.

I've been using zonealarm for several months. It has not betrayed my faith yet.

I use ZoneAlarm. Best features of it are: it works, and it's free
If you are ready to pay, the choice is much bigger. But you don't loose much if you use a free one anyway. It can block incoming connections and programs from your PC trying to access the internet, and it alerts you every time a new program tries it. What else does it need...

Whichever one you choose, go with whats easiest for your user level. If you are totally ignorant of firewall setup then do NOT use anything like Kerio/Tiny. A badly configured firewall is worse than not having one at all. I would almost always recommend Zonealarm or Outpost to people who don't know about FW setup.

I keep hearing one adverstised, think it's call Barracuda -- an in-line hardware and software firewall. They target business users so I'm sure it's pricey. One of these days I'll chase down info on it and post that.
